September Mahi Fishing

Septemer Mahi Mahi dolphin fish

September mahi have been larger than average. The Month of September is what we consider the last of our summer here in the Florida Keys. It is the height of hurricane season and the slowest part of our tourist season for many charter operations things slow down quite a bit in September but if we get the weather the Fishing out there has shown up with some nice mahi this year much larger than normal.

Fishing Report

Are mahi-mahi dolphin fishing report comes out of Key West. The INXS that runs out of Oceans Edge Marina on Stock Island has been running pretty regular for the last week and experiencing these larger than normal mahi Captain Steve and Garret have been fishing from the reef edge all the way out to 1500 feet of water daily in the hunt for these tasty fish. They have reported that their best catches have been between 550 and 850 water on rips and slicks, as well as the occasional floating debris if it is “seasoned”. The debris are also holding wahoo.

What Does It Mean?

Seasoned Debri – This means that the object we find floating in the water, has growth and bait fish underneath of it. It has been floating in the gulf stream for quite some time, at least a few weeks. A seasoned piece of debris, attracts bait fish, and therefore attracts mahi-mahi wahoo, and possible Marlin in the area looking to take advantage of the easy meal.

Many of the boats that go deep sea fishing out of the Florida Keys, have towers or upper control stations where the captain can see very well for a long distance to help him find debris, weed lines, and birds. The INXS out of Key West is one of those boats with a 30 foot tower.

Pro Tips

For the do-it-yourself guys that read our fishing reports, the INXS reports that most of their eats from the larger fish hit surfacing lures such as the Iland Sea Star rigged with Ballyhoo that were making a lot of noise. Some were even trying to eat the teaser. Many of the fish were singles or doubles we haven’t seen a lot of of the big number schools that we typically see in September.

Booking A Deep Sea Fishing Charter

Booking a deep-sea fishing charter is really easy, but there are some wrong ways to do it when in the search for a good deep-sea fishing trip use Google search and look for the area you will be fishing in the Florida Keys and then right in deep sea fishing for example, Islamorada deep sea fishing and see what the selections are and look for the individual boats not the online fishing booking companies. Go direct whenever you can. You’re not only saving yourself a tremendous amount of headache but also the Captain’s money if you have any questions feel free to reach out and give us a call.
