Flats Fishing Islamorada

Islamorada, often referred to as the “Sport Fishing Capital of the World,” is renowned for its flats fishing. This style of fishing is conducted in shallow, clear waters where anglers can sight fish for various species. The expansive flats, located on the bay side and ocean side of the islands, provide an ideal habitat for game fish like bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook, and redfish.

Targeted Species

Bonefish: Known for their speed and elusive nature, bonefish are a prime target in the flats of Islamorada. These fish are typically found in shallow, sandy areas and are best targeted with light tackle or fly fishing gear.
Permit: Permit are larger and stronger than bonefish, making them a challenging catch. They frequent the flats, especially around areas with a mix of sand and grass.
Tarpon: The “Silver King” of the flats, tarpon, are known for their acrobatic jumps and powerful runs. They are often found in the deeper channels of the flats, particularly during their migration season from April to June.
Snook: These fish are usually found near mangroves and structures on the flats. They are known for their aggressive strikes and are a favorite among anglers.
Redfish: Also known as red drum, these fish are common in the shallow flats, particularly around grass beds and oyster bars.

Best Seasons For Flats Fishing Islamorada

Spring (March to May): This is an excellent time for all species, with tarpon migration peaking and bonefish and permit being active.
Summer (June to August): Warm waters make for great fishing, especially early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the midday heat.
Fall (September to November): Cooler temperatures bring a variety of fish to the flats, with a particular focus on redfish and snook.
Winter (December to February): While fishing can be more challenging due to cooler water, bonefish and permit are still active on warmer days.
