How To Prepare For Your Bonefishing Adventure

Casting Practice: Bonefishing requires accurate casting, often to fish that are 30-50 feet away. Practicing your casting skills before your trip can help improve your accuracy and increase your chances of success.

Sun Protection: The Lower Florida Keys’ flats offer little shade, making sun protection essential. Bring a wide-brimmed hat, polarized sunglasses, sunscreen, and lightweight, long-sleeved clothing to protect yourself from the sun’s rays.

Footwear: Some bonefishing may involve wading in shallow water, so bring suitable footwear like wading boots or sandals designed for fishing.

Bonefishing Charters

Charter durations are typically 4, 6 or 8 hours in length on board flats fishing boats or poling skiffs. 2 or less persons.. Some captains with state of the art bay boats offer bonefishing for a more stable platform.

Flats Fishing: Bonefishing primarily takes place on the flats, which are shallow areas of water that may be only a few inches to a couple of feet deep. Anglers use light tackle and fly rods to cast to bonefish, often sight-fishing by spotting the fish before casting. This method requires patience, precision, and skill, as bonefish are known for their keen senses and wariness.

Expert Guides: Hiring a local guide is highly recommended for bonefishing in the Lower Florida Keys. These guides are intimately familiar with the flats, tides, and bonefish behavior, significantly increasing your chances of a successful outing. They can spot fish from a distance, position the boat correctly, and provide valuable tips on casting and presentation.

Fly Fishing and Spin Fishing: While fly fishing is the most popular method for bonefishing, many charters also accommodate spin fishing. Fly fishing for bonefish typically involves using lightweight rods, specialized lines, and small, realistic fly patterns that mimic shrimp or crabs. Spin fishing can be just as effective, using lightweight spinning rods, small jigs, or soft plastics.

Catch and Release: Bonefishing is primarily a catch-and-release sport, promoting conservation and the sustainability of the fishery. Anglers are encouraged to handle bonefish carefully and minimize their time out of the water to ensure their safe release.
