Florida Keys fishing report for this week of May 22, 2026. Coming just after the new moon on the 16th and the full moon will be on the 31st. Last week was loaded with mixed weather patterns some rain, and the last few days lots of wind. As NOAH in the state of Florida are figuring out their thing for the opening of red snapper season, which is turned into a debacle. The opening of grouper season May 1 made lots of heroes offshore with some nice blacks red and of course the deep water complex with snowy grouper.
Check out our Facebook group, Florida Keys Fishing for more details about the red snapper thing.
Apparently NOAA has pulled the rug out from many anglers who were anticipating the south Atlantic red snapper season to open here shortly. We are sure this is gonna cost some complication for many as they have made reservations to come to the keys and go fishing for these tasty fish. That said there are no changes to the Gulf Federal red snapper plans for seasons this year – yet…. in response Captain John Sahagian was seen quoted on Facebook “The fact that the government thinks it is ever ok to allow a commercial fisherman to harvest a fish to sell to an individual while stating that there are not enough fish for an individual to harvest for themselves is the real crime.” Capt. John is one of our preferred Lower Keys Fishing Guides Owner operator at Fun Yet Charters.
A look at the Florida Keys weather coming up for those of us wanting to get out on the water. The weather gets a little bit itchy starting on Sunday with increasing east and southeasterly winds up to 20 knots mixed in with some rain chances. It looks like these conditions are going to hold up hold up all the way through Tuesday. Wednesday winds start to lay down but keeping the rain chances then by Thursday through the rest of the LRF gives us those summer like conditions. The GFC computer model is showing a broad stroke chance of a minor Trop coming through the straights End of the month.. So it looks like paradise should coming up for Florida Keys Fishing.
Trop – Tropical disturbance
LRF – Long Range Forecast usually out 10 days.
The Florida Keys Fishing report looks like this. Up and down the keys deep sea fishing is producing some larger mahi-mahi, which is typical this time of year coming up on the full moon don’t forget to look for your wahoo opportunities as the full moon can enhance that bite. Full moon wahoo. The blue marlin fishing possibilities will increase as well.
Backcountry fishing for tarpon all up and down the Florida Keys or flats fishing Key West for bonefish and permit. Reds and snook out of the Islamorada flats fishing and Key Largo flats fishing. This might be your best bet for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday to avoid the big sea conditions offshore.
Reef fishing has been great Florida Keys wide, but it’s getting ready to get really good on this next full moon. We expect the yellowtail bite to not only get better but get larger fish. The mutton snappers will go on the spawn, providing consistently larger fish for our anglers. All that coupled with great weather, we can only imagine what kind of results we’re going to see at Florida Keys fishing group.
Tarpon Fishing – for the live bait guys, the channels and the bridges are key spots. Bait will include threadfin, Pin, fish, mullet, and crabs.
Yellowtail snapper – best on the reef between 50 and 90 feet right on the drop offs bring lots of chum use light fluorocarbon leader.
Mutton snapper – can be targeted between five and 205 feet. Live bait works well so does cut Ballyhoo plugs, live crabs, and large shrimp. No Boat? Fish the bridges.
