Fishing The Dry Tortugas
National Park
The Dry Tortugas National
Park is one of those places that every destination has. The place
a visitor
wants to see while they are there. Like Wyoming has the
Yellowstone National Park and All of Hawaii has great waves for
surfing but Waimea is the biggest. The Florida Keys and Key West
are awesome for fishing but The Dry Tortugas is incredible.
Located just 70 miles to the
west of Key West across some of the prettiest waters to be seen
anywhere in the world lies a circular chain of small islands or
glorified sand bars over ancient coral reefs. On one of these
islands lies a Civil war fort that has collected much history.
On another small island lies a Light house to ward off
potentially wayward vessels from hitter her precious reefs that
encompass the entire set of islands all of which are
uninhabited.
The Fishing in the Dry
Tortugas is incredible. From fishing for Pelagic species to
bottom fishing the reef, to working the many wrecks that are
doting the charts all around the island chain. The fishing is
good because the pressure is light. Unlike many locations in the
Florida Keys the Dry Tortugas is hard to access and if you plan
on fishing inside the national park boundaries your chosen
charter operation needs to have a Park Permit to do so. There
are only 11 handed out.
Types Of Charters
We have charters to the Dry
Tortugas that offer a broad spectrum in service, price and
description. From a 120 ft sleep aboard boat that carries 36
fishermen priced per head that fishes the deeper periphery of
the Park in head boat style. Then we have a smaller 32 - 36 ft
center console that offer one day and over night trips for 4 or
less that actually lands and stays in the park boundaries
camping on the beach. Specializing in light tackle wreck, deep
and shallow fishing tactics and snorkeling opportunities on the
pristine reefs as well.
Take a look at each one of
the charters we have listed and their web sites to see what is
best for you. Fishing the Dry Tortugas is very specialized and
the charters we have listed are not only the best but the few
that do this sort of trip.
The Future
There is not much time left
to take advantage of these incredible fishing grounds as we
never know what the powers that are in charge may do with
closures and limitations to the Park Boundaries. Every year it
seems as though they are talking about taking away another chunk
for research or one environmental purpose or another.
Tours To The Fort
Jefferson Dry Tortugas
There are three companies
out of Key West that offer tours to the Dry Tortugas National
Park to visit the Fort Jefferson. One is by Sea Plane and the
other two are by Fast ferry boat. Each of them offers
Snorkeling, A tour of the Fort Jefferson and some time on the
beaches, not to mention a spectacular journey to get there.
